What Heat and Cold Actually Do to TPE and XPE Mats

A car left in the sun is a much harsher environment than the weather report implies. The cabin floor runs well above outside air, and the upper surfaces run hotter still.

That worries people, and it mostly should not. Neither TPE nor XPE is harmed by simply sitting in a hot car. What harms them is the shape they are held in while they are hot.

Diagram showing outside air, cabin floor and upper surface temperature ranges against how TPE and XPE behave at each
One scale runs through both halves: where those temperatures occur, and how each material responds to them.

In heat

TPE softens. It becomes slightly more flexible and slightly grippier underfoot, then returns to normal as the car cools. That is the material behaving as designed, not degrading.

XPE has a foam core, and foam held compressed while hot can take a set. Lying flat on the floor, nothing happens. With something heavy parked on one corner through a hot afternoon, that corner can stay dented.

In cold

Both go stiffer. TPE stays flexible enough to lift and shake out. XPE gets noticeably harder and handles more like a board than a mat.

The practical consequence is handling rather than damage. A very cold mat is easier to crack at a fold than a warm one, so on a freezing morning lift it out flat instead of rolling it.

The thing that actually warps mats

Almost every case that reaches us as "my mat warped in the heat" turns out to be a storage case.

A mat folded into a boot cools in that folded shape. A mat stood on its edge against a garage wall for a fortnight cools with a curve in it. A mat left under a heavy box takes the shape of the box. In all three the heat only made the material compliant; the shape came from what it was resting against.

This is also why mats sometimes arrive with a curl. They were packed folded, and they cooled that way in transit.

How to get the shape back

StepWhy
Lay it flat in the footwell it belongs inThe floor is the mould. Nothing you own matches it better
Leave it a warm day or twoThe material needs to be compliant again to relax
Weight the corners lightly if they liftBooks work. The point is even pressure, not force

Most curls come out within a day or two of ordinary use. A mat that has been folded for months may keep a faint line, but it will sit flat and function normally.

Do not try to speed this up with a heat gun or hot water. You cannot control the temperature closely enough, and you will end up with a permanent distortion instead of a temporary one.

Storage, if the mats have to come out

If you swap sets seasonally, or take mats out to clean the carpet, store them flat and stacked. Never folded, never rolled tight, never on edge.

Flat in the boot is fine. Flat under a bed is better. The garage floor is fine as long as nothing gets parked on top of them.
